The Association of Dietitians of Ukraine has proposed this change, arguing that such dishes may not be the most effective way to meet students' nutritional needs.

Irina Gizbrecht, a member of the association, explained the rationale behind this recommendation in a recent interview. She pointed out that soups often contain potatoes, which quickly make children feel full, leading them to be less inclined to eat the rest of their meal.

According to Gizbrecht, this undermines the goal of providing students with a balanced and nutritious lunch.

The dietitian advocates for a menu change that prioritizes heartier and more nutrient-rich dishes.

She suggested serving a side dish with meat or fish alongside a fresh salad as a more effective option.

“School cafeterias should eliminate first courses: children quickly fill up on potatoes,” - Association of Nutritionists of Ukraine.

The proposal has sparked discussions on how schools can best support the health and development of students through thoughtful meal planning.

While some may view soups as a comforting staple, experts like Gizbrecht argue that it’s time to focus on dishes that provide sustained energy and balanced nutrition.
