A police officer in Kryvyi Rih has been detained and charged with embezzling money from deceased individuals. This was reported by "Vідомо," referencing the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine.
According to the investigation, the police investigator, throughout 2024, exploited his official powers when responding to incidents, seizing phones, passports, and bank cards from people who had died of natural causes.
After acquiring their personal belongings, the suspect withdrew money from ATMs, made purchases in stores, and unlawfully accessed banking apps on the stolen phones, gaining access to pensioners' deposits. In some instances, he even took out loans in the names of the deceased.
In total, the police officer misappropriated over 740,000 hryvnias.
During searches at his residence, law enforcement confiscated bank cards, mobile phones, passports of the deceased, as well as ammunition of various calibers and three units of unregistered firearms.
Under the procedural guidance of prosecutors from the Office of the Prosecutor General, the law enforcement officer has been detained and charged with fraud, misappropriation of someone else's property, unauthorized interference with electronic systems, and illegal handling of weapons (part 4 of Article 190, Article 317, part 2 of Article 361, part 1 of Article).
The suspect is currently under custody, with an alternative option for bail set at 3 million hryvnias.
