On Thursday, November 28, the authorities of Cyprus revoked the passports of 77 individuals who obtained citizenship through the controversial "golden visa" scheme. Among them is Ukrainian billionaire Igor Kolomoisky. This was reported by Politico, as conveyed by "Vidomo".

The "passport for cash" program, which was suspended in 2020, allowed foreigners to gain residency and citizenship if they invested millions of euros in the country. However, during a meeting of the Council of Ministers this week, the government decided to revoke another 77 "golden" passports, the majority of which belong to citizens of Russia and China.

Among those who lost their Cypriot passport were notable figures: Ukrainian billionaire Igor Kolomoisky, Russian businessmen Alexey Kuzmichev and Oleg Deripaska, former FSB officer Sergey Kovbasyuk, as well as Malaysian financier Joe Lowe.

The reasons for the revocations included false information in declarations, criminal backgrounds, and violations of naturalization conditions. In total, the number of revoked "golden" passports has risen to 286.

The "golden visa" scheme brought approximately 7 billion euros to Cyprus. However, since 2022, following the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the country has intensified its efforts to combat illegal financial operations.

Additionally, in collaboration with the United States, Cyprus is tightening measures against money laundering, bringing in experts from the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI.
