One essential task to perform in the raspberry patch as autumn arrives is to protect it from Didymella, or purple blotch. Getting rid of this issue is quite challenging, and what particularly frustrates gardeners is that this pathogen tends to affect raspberries more severely the higher the yield. Modern, high-yield, large-fruited varieties with a long harvest period suffer the most.
Unfortunately, most synthetic treatments are ineffective against Didymella. This is due to the unique biology of the pathogen, as well as its remarkable ability to quickly develop resistance to the active substances found in synthetic pesticides.
Products based on copper remain effective. The main rule for their use is that they can only be applied when there is no longer any harvest on the raspberry plants. During these periods, treatments using Bordeaux mixture, malachite solution, Burgundy mixture, and others are permitted.
If the aforementioned method is suitable for summer raspberries, it should not be used for remontant varieties.
In this case, alongside autumn fertilization, it is advisable to apply Metarhizium, which has a unique ability to eliminate Didymella, as well as Rhizoctonia and other raspberry diseases. It can also be applied separately at any time, even in spring.
